University of Colorado to Offer Cannabis Degree
A new degree in cannabis is now soon to take off at the University of Colorado. The university’s “Cannabis, Biology, and Chemistry” course is now ready for students to choose after the program received state approval on Friday. Similar to a double major in biology and chemistry, the program comes with access to a lab that is licensed for the cultivation of industrial hemp for the purpose of cannabidiol (CBD) extraction. Students will get to work on the CBD extracted from the hemp.
The course’s narrative is a focus for natural products with a study on the genetics of cannabis as well as additional courses on biochemistry, neurobiology, analytical chemistry, and genetics. “Cannabis, Biology, and Chemistry” is available to take in the fall of this year at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
It is expected by officials of the university that the cannabis course will draw in a considerable amount of demand.
Dean Lehmpuhi, College of Science and Mathematics dean, stated: “It’s a rigorous degree geared toward the increasing demand coming about because of the cannabis industry. Hemp and marijuana has really come to the forefront in a lot of economic sectors in the country. We’re not pro-cannabis or anti-cannabis. What we’re about will be the science, and training students to look at that science.”
Previously, the recent big announcement that pertains to cannabis was the new research center for the study of chemical compounds found in hemp. The research center will open in the spring this year at the College of Natural Sciences.
