An exciting new cannabis product invention for Organigram Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: OGI) was just announced in the form of a nano-emulsified cannabis-infused powdered beverage mix. The powdered cannabis beverage mix is scheduled to begin sales in Canada sometime in early 2020. Organigram also announced that the formula they have developed, which is a proprietary nano-emulsion technology for a shelf-stable, thermally-stable, and water-compatible cannabinoid emulsion, can be produced into a liquid beverage product as well as a powdered beverage mix.
Greg Engel, Chief Executive Officer of Organigram, stated: “This is an exciting time for cannabis product development. We know that predictability and reliability are important to adult consumers of cannabinoid-infused products. We also believe that a powder additive will offer consumers a unique and differentiated offering, along with convenience and discretion. Allowing consumers to make their own choice as to which beverage they will infuse opens up a new consumption experience for Canadian cannabis consumers.”
Organigram’s nano-emulsion invention in specific addresses an issue in where tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) don’t dissolve in water, a characteristic defined as lipophilic. The particle size of the cannabinoids are purposefully made to be at 20 nm (nanometers) in order to properly disperse in water and be effectively ingested without a significant delay until the cannabis effect can be felt. This powdered beverage formulation invented by Organigram allows consumers to mix a cannabis beverage at their leisure and has been designed to have the effects of cannabis kick in anywhere between 10 to 15 minutes.
Dr. Alec Zhou, Director of Research and Development at Organigram, stated: “In order to reliably speed up this onset/offset process, nano-emulsification of these fatty substances into very small water soluble droplets enables them to be dispersed uniformly in water. This process effectively bypasses a large part of the metabolic process, accelerating absorption of active forms of the cannabinoids into the bloodstream.”
The company is currently in search of a strategic partner that has proven experience with product development in the beverage product markets to utilize the invented liquid formula.
