Officials of Sugar Grove, Illinois Release Cannabis Survey Results

A survey was conducted across 1,648 residents in the Villiage of Sugar Grove in order to determine the majority opinion on cannabis businesses. The state of Illinois recently passed recreational legalization, though a landmark and historic legislation measure instead of ballot initiative, and communities have decisions to make before legalization is in effect on January 1st of 2020.

Out of the total 1,648 resident utility customers surveyed, 696 responses were collected. The feedback desired by the village officials pertained specifically to the presence of a recreational or medicinal dispensary within the community. Residents voted very close to 50/50, 44.9% oppose and 42.6% in favor, with a 12.5% at neutral on a recreational dispensary. Medical cannabis dispensaries were in favor with a 55.4% in support, 32% opposed, and 12.5% neutral.

Respondents to the survey were able to add comment and many noted that their support or opposition to medicinal and recreational cannabis dispensaries is on a conditional basis. One of the popular conditional requirements voiced by the respondents concerned zoning and number of both kinds of cannabis establishments. Another concerns raised by respondents included possible increase of traffic, change to the “small town” community vibes, and a potential impact to quality of life and home values.

Sean Michels, Sugar Grove Village Present, stated: “It appears that our board is leaning against it, but again, no final decision has been made.”

The board of Sugar Grove village is comprised of a retired police officer, a school teacher, real estate broker, certified public accountant, and architecture firm owner.
