Do you remember when New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy promised passage of a legal cannabis bill within his first 100 days in office? This week, Gov. Murphy shot down any hopes of this happening anytime soon.
“This is complicated. We’re starting an entire industry from scratch,” Murphy said when asked about details, which were meant to resolve disagreements regarding taxing cannabis sales and supervision of a social equity program for minors convicted of minor marijuana offenses.
Murphy went on to say, “We have said all along this is not a light lift. I’m optimistic, but we are machining it to get it over the goal line” .

If the Senate voted on the compromise agreement this week it may be likely that Democrats would fall short of the total number of votes needed for passage.
For now, it’s safe to say that it could be some time before New Jersey residents will have access to legal cannabis.
